President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu: Special Economic Zone for Agriculture and Food Security Project to Launch This Year

06 February 2025

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) dedicated to agriculture will be established this year. Alongside this, a key project aimed at ensuring national food security will also be launched.

In his presidential address at the opening session of the People's Majlis this year, the President emphasized the government's commitment to developing the economy through the nation's land resources. He stated that a dedicated zone will be established to support agricultural activities and that efforts in this sector will be significantly expanded.

The President outlined several major initiatives planned for the agricultural sector in 2025, including the establishment of the SEZ for agriculture. He highlighted that the primary challenge facing Maldivian agriculture is ensuring food security.

To address this, a comprehensive project will be initiated this year, focused on strengthening food security through the development of key agricultural products produced locally. The project is expected to be completed by 2028, with substantial benefits projected for the national economy.

One of the most significant challenges faced during the recent pandemic was the difficulty in maintaining adequate food supplies for the population. This was largely due to the underdeveloped and limited agricultural industry in the Maldives. Recognizing this vulnerability, President Muizzu is prioritizing the expansion of agriculture to build resilience and reduce reliance on food imports.

This strategic initiative is expected to enhance domestic food production, secure long-term food supply, and transform agriculture into a key pillar of the Maldivian economy.
