28 May 2025

A special ceremony was held in Fuvahmulah City to officially hand over essential equipment for the Sustainable Agriculture Laboratory and Training Center currently under development. The equipment was presented to the Fuvahmulah City Council as part of ongoing efforts to support modern, sustainable agriculture in the Maldives.

The ceremony was attended by Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr. Mariyam Mariya, the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives H.E. Ishigami Rumiko, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Pek Chuan Gan, Fuvahmulah City Mayor Ismail Rafeeq, and members of the City Council and staff.

The establishment of the Sustainable Agriculture Laboratory and Training Center is a collaborative initiative between the Government of Maldives, the Government of Japan, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In addition to serving as a hub for agriculture-related training, the center will facilitate various components essential to the development of modern, sustainable farming practices in the Maldives.

This initiative aligns with the government’s broader goal of strengthening national food security by building a resilient, self-sufficient agricultural sector through sustainable development.
