The Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr. Mariyam Mariya, has stated that both in the past and present, the Maldivian coconut palm remains intrinsically linked to the Maldivian people.
She made this statement during her speech at a ceremony held in Hulhumalé Phase 2, where 60 coconut palms were planted.
Highlighting the importance of cultivating coconut palms at this event, the Minister said that a coconut palm is not just a tree, but every part of it serves specific purposes, making it as essential to our lives as a backbone. She explained that from childhood, it has been connected to our food, shelter, and way of life. Therefore, she emphasized that the "mother palm" plays an invaluable and crucial role as a fundamental pillar of Maldivian culture and economic system.
A strong, close relationship has formed between the Maldivian nation and the coconut palm. Even today, the coconut palm plays a vital role in every aspect of our lives. Whether viewed from a food perspective, an economic standpoint, or in terms of our environment, the role of the coconut palm is immensely significant and sensitive.
While the fruit of the palm provides food and drink, its fronds are used for shelter and making household utensils, serving as a valuable natural resource. The wood or trunk of the palm is used for building houses and constructing boats. The Minister also noted that this is deeply intertwined with our cherished past and Maldivian traditions.
The Minister has called for everyone to participate in such programs, recognize the importance of planting coconut palms, and work together in this endeavor. She also urged for the swift continuation of coconut palm planting efforts across all atolls of the Maldives. She described this as an investment in our national identity, economic progress, and sustainable environmental development, and called for everyone to unite in this important work to shape the future of the Maldives.
