"Vaadhoo Green Farm" Inaugurated to Enhance Food Security and Women's Empowerment

15 January 2026

The Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr. Mariyam Mariya, officially inaugurated the "Vaadhoo Green Farm" in R. Vaadhoo today.

This project is a collaborative effort between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ministry, and the Vaadhoo Association for Future Development (VAFD). It represents a significant advancement in community-led climate-smart agriculture and the transition to renewable energy in the Maldives.

The Vaadhoo Green Farm introduces commercial-scale hydroponic farming powered directly by renewable energy. The facility incorporates several eco-friendly technologies:

  • Solar-Powered Hydroponics: Rooftop solar panels are used to power irrigation and cooling systems.
  • Resource Management: The system includes rainwater harvesting and the use of eco-friendly growing media.
  • Production Capacity: The facility is designed to produce 600 kg of cucumbers and 400 kg of leafy greens per harvest.

One of the primary goals of this project is to promote gender equality and local economic growth. The farm is projected to generate a monthly income of approximately MVR 80,000, providing a sustainable livelihood for the community.

  • Advanced Training: 18 women have received specialized training in advanced hydroponic farming.
  • Technical Skills: An additional 25 women have been trained in the installation and maintenance of solar energy systems.

The Green Farm is part of a larger success story for Vaadhoo. Through various projects supported by the GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP), VAFD has transformed how the island utilizes energy:

  • Renewable Energy Capacity: A total of 32.5 kW of solar energy has now been established on the island.
  • Environmental Impact: Diesel consumption has been reduced by 32%, preventing more than 20 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
  • Local Expertise: More than 40 individuals have been trained to independently operate and maintain these systems.

The Vaadhoo Green Farm directly supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically focusing on biodiversity protection, climate action, and inclusive economic growth. It stands as a national example of how small island communities can implement transformative changes to face global climate challenges.
