The Aim is to Provide Support for Sustainable Agriculture: Minister Mariya

04 June 2025

Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr. Mariyam Mariya, has emphasized that the government's goal is to equip farmers with the necessary technical training and support to promote sustainable agricultural practices.

She made the statement during the launch of the second phase of the Urban Farming project.

Minister Mariya highlighted that even in densely populated areas like Malé City, many individuals are eager to grow plants—some for personal enjoyment and others as a source of income. However, she acknowledged that these urban farmers often face challenges such as a lack of technical know-how and limited access to reliable marketing channels.

To support these individuals, we are focusing on sharing knowledge about effective sales strategies and creating a dedicated platform to connect them with potential buyers.

The Minister expressed encouragement at how residents have made productive and meaningful use of available urban spaces. She noted that this initiative not only improves individual livelihoods but also boosts the production of locally grown goods, opens up new markets, and contributes to the broader goal of sustainable urban development.
