Nearly 3.9 Million Plants and Plant Parts Imported into Maldives from January to April 2025

05 May 2025

Between January and the end of April this year, a total of 3,869,648 (three million, eight hundred sixty-nine thousand, six hundred forty-eight) plants and plant parts were imported into the Maldives, according to statistics from the Ministry.

These imports arrived through 405 separate shipments. However, 37 of these shipments—containing 4,732 plants and plant parts—were found to be in violation of national import regulations.

Of the non-compliant shipments:

  • 2 shipments, comprising 324 plants and plant parts, were processed with proper documentation after arrival.
  • The remaining 35 shipments, totaling 4,408 plants and plant parts, were destroyed in accordance with official disposal procedures.

The Ministry emphasizes the importance of adhering to established rules and regulations when importing plants and plant materials. Compliance is critical to protect local biodiversity, prevent the spread of pests and diseases, and maintain environmental integrity.

Importers are strongly urged to ensure that all necessary documentation and procedures are followed to avoid penalties and the risk of confiscation or destruction of goods.
