The Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr. Mariyam Mariya, officially inaugurated the opening of the Australian High Commission in the Maldives, marking a significant milestone in the 50-year diplomatic relationship between the two nations.

The inauguration ceremony was held yesterday at Hotel Jen and attended by high-level dignitaries, including Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Richard Marles, Australian High Commissioner David Jessup, and senior officials from the Maldivian government.

In her remarks, Minister Dr. Mariyam Mariya highlighted the historic and enduring partnership between the Maldives and Australia. She noted that the opening of the High Commission signifies more than the establishment of a diplomatic office—it is a testament to the mutual trust and close cooperation that has defined the relationship over the decades.

Dr. Mariya acknowledged Australia's continued support to the Maldives, particularly in key sectors such as higher education, maritime safety and security, and public health. She specifically recognized the impact of the Australia Awards Program, which has enabled many Maldivians to pursue academic opportunities in Australia.

"This is not just the inauguration of a building; it is a reflection of the deep and growing bond between our countries," she stated. "We look forward to strengthening this relationship further and unlocking new opportunities for development and cooperation in the years ahead."

The establishment of the High Commission is expected to enhance bilateral engagement and pave the way for expanded collaboration across multiple sectors.
