The Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr. Maryam Mariya, met with local farmers in Fuvahmulah City during her official visit to the island. The meeting, held last night, focused on understanding the current state of agriculture in the city and identifying key challenges faced by farmers.

During the discussions, farmers shared their concerns and the difficulties they encounter in agricultural practices. They also explored possible solutions and areas where support from the government could enhance productivity and sustainability.

Minister Mariya emphasized that achieving national food security is a top priority for the government. She stressed the importance of building a resilient agricultural system, especially in light of global disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic. “To ensure that the country does not face food shortages during global crises, we must establish sustainable and modern agricultural practices in the Maldives—with farmers playing a central role in this transformation,” she said.

The Ministry has been actively supporting farmers by providing technical training and practical assistance. Currently, hands-on training programs are underway in three additional atolls. These initiatives focus on equipping farmers with modern techniques, introducing innovative resources, and guiding them in accessing markets for their produce.

The visit underscored the government’s commitment to empowering farmers and strengthening the agricultural sector as a critical step toward long-term food security.
