So far this year, 14 islands have formally requested assistance from the Ministry to combat white flies and mosquitoes. However, only one island has collected the supplied items.
According to Ministry records, the nature of the requests varies: some islands have asked for technical support, while others have requested bio-pesticides. Among those who requested bio-pesticides, only one island has actually taken the items provided.
White flies continue to pose a serious challenge to farmers across the Maldives, and ongoing research aims to find a long-term solution. Mosquito outbreaks, which occur more frequently during certain seasons, also remain a concern.
Under the Local Council Act, responsibility for mosquito control lies with local councils, which are expected to allocate funds for this purpose in their budgets. Nevertheless, the Ministry remains committed to providing technical assistance to support local efforts.
