Sh. Goidhoo has become the first island in the Maldives to have Maldives Good Agricultural Practices (MGAP) certified farmers.
The MGAP certificate is an important scheme introduced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare in collaboration with the Japanese government at the national level to strengthen food safety, promote sustainable agricultural principles, and ensure that the produced food is safe, beneficial, and environmentally friendly.
This certificate, developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare (MOAAW) with the assistance of FAO and certified by the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA), ensures compliance with high standards related to food safety, environmental protection, product quality, and worker well-being in farms. Its objective is to promote sustainable, safe, and high-quality agricultural systems to increase public confidence in locally produced goods and expand their marketing opportunities.
The Project for Developing Sustainable Agricultural Economy (PDSAE), funded by the Japanese government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives, has provided training, audits, and assistance in completing certification requirements for farmers in Sh. Goidhoo.
Under this scheme, it is ensured that farming practices will improve the surrounding environment, personal health, and the quality of produce. As such, M-GAP certified farmers will use fertilizers and chemicals according to specific standards when cultivating crops, and water usage will be minimized to reduce waste. They will also take necessary measures to protect the environment and themselves. Additionally, documentation will be maintained at every stage. Therefore, overall, consumers can be assured that products from M-GAP certified farmers are environmentally friendly, adhere to required standards for food and chemical use, and are produced using sustainable methods.
